Strong nonprofit boards are essential to healthy, resilient communities – and this winter, community members can find two upcoming events designed to support individuals who are curious about board service, governance, and nonprofit leadership.

Whether you’re exploring board service for the first time, looking to strengthen your governance skills, or interested in connecting with local nonprofits seeking new board members, these free community events offer accessible entry points into nonprofit leadership.

Nonprofit Board Training

Thursday, January 29 | 6:00–8:00 pm
Glenwood Springs Branch Library

This free training is open to anyone in the community who wants to learn more about what it truly means to serve on a nonprofit board. Evan Zislis of the Hurst Leaders Forum will facilitate a panel of current board members from across the region, offering real-world perspectives on governance, leadership, and board responsibilities.

John Dougherty of Human Service Innovations will provide a presentation outlining the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of nonprofit board service, followed by a Q&A session. Dinner will be provided, along with childcare and interpretation services if needed, making this event accessible to a wide range of community members. RSVP Here.

Nonprofit Board Fair

Wednesday, February 4 | 6:00–8:00 pm
Glenwood Springs Recreation Center

The Nonprofit Board Fair brings together organizations from throughout the region to connect with community members interested in board service. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about different nonprofit missions, ask questions, and explore where their skills and interests may align.

This event is designed to be conversational and welcoming — a chance to build relationships and spark interest in nonprofit leadership. Childcare will not be provided for this event.

Nonprofits participating in the fair are asked to bring:

  • A small appetizer or snack to share
  • Informational materials such as handouts, brochures, or business cards
  • A staff or board representative who can help translate if a bilingual attendee stops by

Please RSVP for the fair by emailing lindsayl@buddyprogram.org.

A Note on Participation

These two events are standalone opportunities – nonprofits do not need to attend the training in order to participate in the recruitment fair.

The Nonprofit Board Training is presented in partnership with Aspen Community Foundation, The Buddy Program, Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association, Human Service Innovations, Hurst Leaders Forum, and Garfield County Libraries.

If you’re interested in growing as a leader, strengthening your understanding of nonprofit governance, or exploring board service in our region, we encourage you to attend.
